Alberta Immigration: Delay in the New Rule for International Students and Institutions

The immigration authorities in Alberta have decided to give more time to global students and institutions to adjust to the new requirements of its Alberta Opportunity Stream.

Effective from April 1, 2019

As per this change, the list of approved post-secondary credentials for PG Work Permit holders will not start taking effect until April 1, 2019. The candidates who enroll before this date in all programs not figuring on the approved list can still qualify for the stream. The condition here is that they must meet other requirements also.

After this date, holders of PGWP will get a consideration if their course is listed.

Such candidates can still submit an application in the Alberta Opportunity Stream when the work permit is backed by a positive LMIA. They need to qualify for Alberta immigration by using the Alberta Express Entry.

A provincial statement cited that the government was extending the transition period in this stream to give students and institutions extra time to adjust.

Qualifying For the Alberta Opportunity Stream

The qualifying norms for this Stream are:

  • Working in an eligible occupation in the province.
  • Having a valid temporary resident status in the country which authorizes the person to work.
  • A CLB 4 score in English or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens 4 in French covering all disciplines for NOC codes. A few jobs like the orderlies Nurse Aides and patient service associates require CLB 7.
  • Having completed basic high school in the country of origin.
  • A minimum of 12 months full-time work experience in the current occupation in the past 18 months. Other than that a minimum of 24 months full-time work experience in a current occupation in Canada/abroad in the past 30 months.

Qualifying norms for Alberta Express Entry

1.    The Express Entry Stream permits the province to nominate some qualified applicants from the federal EE System.

2.    Qualified candidates get direct selection from the EE pool by AINP. Candidates need to get an ITA before they submit the application.

3.    The stream attracts candidates who have strong ties to Alberta and also boost the economy besides increasing diversity. International graduates will also receive the invitation.
