Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program of Canada reopening late - January 02, 2019

Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program of Canada reopening late

As per the announcement of Government of Canada, the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program of Canada will reopen for accepting EOI in the last days of January 2019.

A small wait

Additionally, IRCC said that the details of the opening date will be released in the future. The PGP permits PRs and Canadian citizens above the age of 18 years to sponsor their parents or grandparents to seek permanent residence. Last year this program reopened for accepting EOI on Jan 2nd, but this is not happening in the present year.

IRCC has a plan of processing nearly 20,000 applications in PGP in the present year. ITAs will be issued to the initial 20,000 sponsors who pass the eligibility norms. They also need to submit an Interest-to-Sponsor Form after meeting the requirements of the program.

A new approach

This approach, based on the timing of arrival criteria for accepting applications, has replaced the controversial random lottery process. It was introduced by IRCC last year and scrapped later. There was a criticism that it was unfair for the persons who were waiting for many years for sponsoring their loving relatives.

IRCC said the decision to revert to timing of arrival approach happened after taking the opinion of clients and stakeholders. It has the aim of streamlining access to the program, and also to improve the client experience. After using this method the application process will be more flexible and help in receiving many applications.
